The logo for the 13th CEC Assembly in Lyon 2009

A logo symbolizing hope and movementA logo symbolizing hope and movement

The logo for the 13th Assembly of CEC focuses on the boat, a longstanding symbol of the ecumenical movement, with a continuity appropriate for CEC’s 50th anniversary in 2009.At the same time, it is designed to represent the theme of our forthcoming Assembly in Lyon, “Called to One Hope in Christ”. The boat with the cross as its mast is swept along the sea beneath the starry sky of Europe. Its movement points towards a new and united hope for the future of European churches in Christ.

The stars, in addition to representing the starry sky of the European flag, also combine with the logo’s colour scheme of blue, white and red (like the French flag), to symbolize the location of our Assembly in Lyon, France, a City of Light. There are intentionally seven stars, referring to Revelation 1.
Finally, the logo is representative of one of the most important events at the Assembly, the merger between CEC and CCME: CEC’s present logo is red and CCME’s blue (with stars above the boat).

The logo was designed by the Danish design company designWerk and produced by the Danish Church Media Centre, an ecumenical organisation focusing on church communication.
